Renovations to a historic home in Albemarle County, Virginia required a new balcony railing on the second floor of an addition to the home.

A request from the client was to reuse materials from an old spiral staircase (built by Stokes years ago) that had been removed during the renovation. The Stokes team came up with a design that incorporated the forged flowers – from the old staircase –  and took into consideration the design and finish of the new columns the railing would be bolted to.

After the client’s review and approval of the first railing design, the team got to work fabricating the railing sections - five in total, taking 300 hours to complete.

Due to the lack of access to the second floor balcony from the inside (very narrow staircase) and no access from the outside, the large railing panels had to be lifted from the ground to the balcony.

After 25 total hours, the railing was installed and the bronze flowers had a new home.

A railing and handrails were needed for an interior staircase in a newly constructed home in Montgomery County, Virginia.

With a curved transition from the landing to the stairs, the team of Stokes Blacksmiths needed to make a model of the transition curve to build the rail piece from.

Providing three design ideas and incorporating the client’s request for a bronze-colored paint, the approved project consisted of three railing panels, the U-shaped transition section, and two wall handrails.

After 200 man hours, the panels were ready to travel to the Christiansburg area for installation.

The onsite welding and fitting were completed in 75 man hours.

The finished railing is an elegant throwback from the past that glows in the sunlight and enhances the wooden staircase.
